LABOR LEADERS ENDORSE DESPINES IN PA STATE REPRESENTATIVE RACE

Donald J. Despines

(Harrisburg, Pa.) - Ken Kertesz, Chairman of the Pennsylvania Legislative Board of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), announced that the union will publically endorse BLET member Donald J. Despines (D) for Pennsylvania State Representative in the 16th Legislative District.

Speaking on behalf of the BLET, Kertesz said he is impressed with Despines' understanding of the issues that concern union members and his commitment to improving the local community. The 16th Legislative District covers Ambridge, Aliquippa, Harmony Township, Baden, Economy, Fair Oaks, Crescent Township, Ross Township and Franklin Park.

"Working families in Western Pennsylvania deserve leadership that will support and fight for their rights," Kertesz said. "Donald Despines' experience in the transportation industry puts him in a unique position to do that. Being a BLET member himself, Donald understands and has experienced firsthand the wide variety of issues facing the industry, such as safety."

Despines' career began in the financial services sector, where he spent time in several areas of business, including sales, accounting, mortgage financing and insurance. He moved to the transportation industry in 2002 when he became a conductor for Norfolk Southern Corp.

That broad range of experiences has led Despines, 30, to make economic development the top issue in his campaign. He'll seek general infrastructure improvements for communities in the 16th District, saying no area can attract or retain jobs with roads, bridges and water/sewer lines that are near the end of their useful life.

"My campaign is not based on 'politics as usual,' " Despines said. "I am not a professional politician, and I have never worked in government or for any political entity. I have ideas and enthusiasm to help my community, a community that has taught me many valuable lessons throughout the years."
