(York, Pa.) -- The executive director of Family First Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center dedicated to providing high quality, affordable care at its sites in York, Lewisberry and Hanover, received the City of York Humanitarian Award at the mayor's State of the City Address. Jenny Englerth, who has worked at Family First Health for nearly four years, was presented with a certificate, a Key to the City and a white rose lapel pin by York Mayor John S. Brenner during a ceremony April 3 at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York. "It is an honor that I accept on behalf of Family First Health and all the good work our employees are doing to stand up for the rights of the uninsured and underinsured residents of our city," Englerth said. "It is wonderful to be recognized for the difference Family First Health in making in the York community." Now in its sixth year, the York Humanitarian Award is given to a person or organization that, through unyielding sacrifice and persistence, has done the most to improve the quality of life of the city's residents during the past year. The mayor and his directors select the honoree. A local businessman nominated her for the award. In the nomination application, he said: "Without this organization, many residents and citizens of the City of York would go without healthcare. ... Not only has FFH provided healthcare to citizens regardless of their ability to pay; they have expanded their operation to serve more clients." In 2007, Family First Health's four locations cared for 55,486 medical and dental patients -- the vast majority of which were Medicaid patients. Jenny Englerth, a native of Indianapolis, has overseen several recent expansions that have helped Family First Health continue its mission. Those expansions include a medical center in York and a dental center in Hanover, where there was a shortage of dentists who could serve Medicaid-eligible patients. Family First Health plans to address healthcare accessibility issues that are specific to Gettysburg residents with the addition of a Gettysburg Medical Center that will open in early 2009.
