The local artistic family presents a unique mix of paintings, sculptures, glassware and photography "The Hershey Half
II," an exhibit featuring the work and creative
talents of the Hershey family, opens on Saturday,
November 11. "The Hershey Half II" gets its name from the Hershey family side of Hershey Philbin Associates, a Camp Hill, Pa. based strategic communications firm. Scott Hershey is one of the company's senior partners and one of the 10 participants in the exhibit. Not only is Hershey an accomplished professional in the advertising art industry, but he is also a respected master violinmaker. He, and the rest of his artistic rich family credit each other for their creative inspiration and drive. "This exhibit allows us to get together as a family and share our diverse creative talents with each other and the public," Hershey said. "It's an exciting event that we looked forward to organizing." One of Scott Hershey's primary influences, his uncle Pete Foley of Mount Joy, Pa., will display a variety of paintings at the exhibit. Foley spent 45 years in the graphic arts industry after receiving an education in graphics, commercial and fine art. Although he prefers to work mainly with oils and pastels, he continues to experiment with new painting techniques and feels his painting is "a daily discipline" but also "a way of life." Foley paints landscapes and portraits either on location or with the use of a photo. Deborah Hershey, Scott's wife, talented writer and artist, will display her pastel paintings and reveal a new style of collage work that allows her to break from her tendency toward realism. The collage pieces combine found objects and original artwork with images such as vintage photography and type styles transferred in oil paint. Twenty-eight-year-old daughter to Scott and Deborah, Holly Hershey-Burns is displaying a variety of painted glassware, from wine and champagne glasses to mugs and vases all created with a unique and funky style. Hershey-Burns' work is for sale during the exhibit. She also creates custom glass paintings by request. Two of Scott Hershey's siblings will share their methods of creative expression at "The Hershey Half II." Michael Hershey, a carpenter and construction manager by trade credits Scott Hershey as a significant early creative influence. Michael Hershey's photography hobby has evolved into a burgeoning second career due to his involvement with the Hershey Camera Club as well as his desire to expand his capabilities. His "photojournalistic" style work is also on display. Deborah Hershey-Morris, Scott Hershey's younger sister has created her unique style of folk art using her sewing skills. Her creations are unique combinations of fabric scraps, paint and much imagination. When she is not stitching or designing her next piece, Deborah Hershey-Morris can be found combing the flea markets, antique shops and Goodwill stores for the elements that will inspire future creations. The other two exhibitors are Scott Hershey's cousin Eric Muench and Muench's son Patrick. Eric is a professional realtor in Lancaster, Pa. with a passion for photography. Specializing in digital, color photography, most of Eric Muench's photos are outdoors scenes. He became interested in photography as a teen, learning a lot of what he knows from his father, Charles E. Muench. Eric Muench's son Patrick is also an aspiring photographer. Currently a sophomore at Hempfield High School, Patrick Muench's photos are similar to his fathers. Most of his work is digital color, but he also works in black and white. Award winning guitarist Kevin Neidig will perform throughout the November 11 reception. Neidig, a close friend to the Hershey Family, has been recognized for his musical talents in vocals, guitar, banjo and mandolin. He studied under Grammy-nominated Sound Master Jonathan Goldman and performed at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics as part of the group Voxology.
