Urban Studio architectural design reception.
Gillenwater, Carlisle SynTec's Manager of Advanced
Projects, will serve as Chairman of the Urban
Studio's Construction Products Advisory
Committee. "Richard's construction industry expertise is well known in Central Pennsylvania, as is his extensive project management experience and history. He is a dynamic, mission-oriented professional who brings many talents to the Harrisburg Urban Studio, and we are fortunate to have his assistance," Mayor Reed said. The Harrisburg Urban Studio is modeled after Auburn University's famous Rural Studio, a program that provides architectural students with a practical learning experience while enhancing the environment of disadvantaged communities. Mayor Reed initiated the Urban Studio in March 2004. A variety of advisory committees provide support to the Urban Studio. The committees consist of professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, construction management, construction products and community relations. The construction products committee will serve as an educational and mentoring resource to Urban Studio students as well as assisting in the process of obtaining proper building materials to use in future projects. "Dick Gillenwater not only provides the Urban Studio with experienced commercial roofing consultation, he also specializes in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), sustainable design, and roof gardens as well as a number of other 'green' related construction issues across the nation," Robert Philbin, the Urban Studio Task Force coordinator, said. Gillenwater began his career with Carlisle in 1979 as Manager of Technical Services. He has served as Manager of Systems Engineering, Manager of New Product Development and Director of Research and Development. Additionally, Gillenwater is active in the Single-Ply Roofing Industry (SPRI), EPDM Roofing Association (ERA), and Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC). "It's a privilege to be able to contribute to this unique program that assists students in obtaining valuable practical experience while benefiting the Harrisburg community," Gillenwater said. "I am honored to chair the construction committee. Mayor Reed is one of the most progressive public officials in the state and I look forward to working with him on future projects."
