COMMUNITY FREE DAY AT THE NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM

(Harrisburg, Pa.) - The National Civil War Museum will be hosting a community free day at the Museum on Saturday, November 10, which coincides with Veteran's Day weekend. Free admission to the Museum will be available to all, courtesy of Caretti, Inc., PA Area Council of Boys & Girls Club, and the Technology Council of Central Pennsylvania. "The Technology Council is pleased to co-host the community day at The National Civil War Museum. It is an excellent way for children and adults to learn more about our nation's history in the most comprehensive museum in the nation. Plus, the day is featuring great updates for leading companies on today's technologies versus 1861 technologies," stated Kelly Lewis, president of the Technology Council.

The theme for this community day is: Then and Now: Soldier experiences' in training, technology and daily life. The tentative schedule of events includes:

10:00am - 5:00pm

Care packages: bring an item to send to our troops in Iraq (suggested items include: men's razors, shaving cream, beef or turkey jerky, nuts, coffee (cans or bags), coffee creamer, shampoo, batteries, etc.)

11:00am - 3:00pm

Book signing with Dr. Peter Keim, author of A Grand Old Flag: A History of the United States through its Flags

11:00am - 4:00pm

28th Infantry Division will be providing military vehicles (LMTV, helicopter, etc.) & a rock climbing wall

Timed activities:

11am, 1pm & 3pm

Artillery Demonstrations with the 4th Maryland Artillery

11:00am Presentation:

John Deppen will portray General Winfield Scott Hancock and discuss General Hancock's experiences in the battle of Gettysburg

12:15pm:

Lecture with Museum educator James Brennan: daily life of Civil War soldiers; followed by modern life of soldier lecture

1:30pm:

Be recruited into the 1861 Union Army

The National Civil War Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. Between April 1 and Labor Day, the Museum is open seven days a week. Admission to the Museum is normally $8.00 for adults, with reduced rates for children, seniors and families.
